Happy Eid Ul Adha to all! Greetings from Singapore. Let's talk a bit about this 2nd festival in Islam, the Eid Ul Adha festive. Why do Muslims Celebrate Eid Ul Adha?
Eidul Adha is a festival that falls on the 10th of Dzulhijjah of the Islamic calendar. Muslims around the world celebrate this day to commemorate the obedient deed of the Prophet Ibrahim (A.S) to sacrifice his son Prophet Ismail (A.S), as commanded by Allah (S.W.T). Eidul Adha is the second of two festivals in Islam, first being Eidul Fitri. Eidul Adha is celebrated after the Hajj.
Allah tested Ibrahim by commanding him in a dream to sacrifice his son, Ismail. But when he reached the mountain top and was about to slaughter his son, Allah made a sheep appear and hence it is sacrificed instead, thus commemorating the celebration, Eidul Adha.
On this festival, there are 2 essential things that Muslims do which is perform the Solat Eid ul Adha and sacrifice an animal, usually sheep. After the sacrifice, Muslims would sometimes visit relatives to celebrate the festival, similar for the Eid Ul Fitr celebration. In Singapore for 2009, this Eid fell on 27 November. Muttons galore! God bless. Wallahu alam bissawab.
